Favourite Sports and Recreational Activities in Denmark

With many people choosing to invest for the future, it is no wonder that Denmark holiday homes are now so popular. Denmark is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe that borders the nations of Sweden, Norway, and Germany. Denmark also borders the Baltic and North Seas, and is made from many islands. Due to its geographical location, the sea has a large role to play in the favourite recreational activities of the country, with fishing, sailing, water sports, and boating all popular. Professional and organised sport also plays an important role in the culture of Denmark, with some of the most popular sports including football, sailing, golf, tennis, cycling, badminton, handball, and speedway racing.
Like everywhere else in Europe, football plays an important role in Denmark. Football is played throughout the nation, in both professional and amateur leagues as well as many unorganised games around the country. In 1992 the national football team won the European Championship, by defeating Germany 2-0 on goals to John Jensen and Kim Vilfort. A number of other Danish sports teams have also had international success, including several speedway racing teams who have won world championships and a number of famous individual sporting stars.

The geography and climate of Denmark have influenced the recreational activities and sports that are popular there, with many activities either based on the water during the summer or played indoors during the winter time. Some of the countries most famous water sportsmen include 12 times windsurfing world champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck and four time Olympic champions Jesper Bank and Paul Elvstrom. In terms of indoor sports, some of the most well known names include Badminton players Morten Frost, Erland Kops, Peter Gade, Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen, Flemming Delfs, Camilla Martin; table tennis player Michael Maze; and handball player Anja Andersen. Two other sports people of note to come from Denmark include 24 Hours Le Mans racer Tom Kristensen, and American Footballer's all time leading point scorer Morten Andersen.
