The History of Panathenaic Stadium

Panathenaic Stadium, also called The Panathinaiko, is an athletic stadium in Greece that hosted the first ever Olympic Games in 1896. Panathenaic Stadium is also known as the Kallimarmaro, which means "beautifully marbled". This stadium is rich in history and Greek tradition, especially considering the fact that it was reconstructed from remains of the ancient Greek stadium. Panathenaic Stadium is the only major stadium in the world that is built entirely from white marble, which comes from the famous Mount Penteli. The fact that this stadium hosted the first ever Olympic Games is more than enough to give it the status of a legend in the world of famous sporting arenas, even though it has a history that goes back much further than 1896.
In ancient times, the Panathenaic Stadium was used to host some of what were called the Panathenaic Games, which were held in honour of the Goddess Athena. While it originally was made from a variety of materials, including wood for the seating, in 329 BC it was remade entirely in marble. Its construction has changed a lot over the ages, as has its capacity and the kinds of events that have been hosted there. Panathenaic Stadium has an original design by modern standards, as it was built long before the era of standardised athletics venues and sporting fields. It follows the ancient model of athletics tracks that looks much like a hairpin, and currently has a capacity of 45,000 spectators.

The Panthenaic Stadium is in down town Athens, and is a popular tourist destination for many people who visit Greece. While the size of the stadium makes it unusable for many modern sports, it has been used to honour the homecoming of various Greek national sporting teams, as a location for the opening ceremony of the World Athletics Championships in 1997, and even as a concert venue by composer Vangelis. Some other world class music artists have also had a chance to perform at the Panathenaic Stadium, including Bob Dylan, Metallica, Tina Turner, and Depeche Mode. The Panathenaic Stadium is an important part of Greek sporting and cultural history, and continues to play an important role in the culture of Greece today.
