Wimbledon - the Event and the Location

Wimbledon may be a suburb in London, but most people know it as the location for the most famous tennis event on the international calender. This grass court tennis championships is one of only four Grand Slam tournaments, and many people consider it to be the most prestigious of them all. Wimbledon takes place every year at the All England Club in the London suburb of Wimbledon, where this famous tournament has had its home since 1877. Along with the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open, Wimbledon is the location of one of the most coveted prizes in the world of tennis.
The Wimbledon event is broken down into five main events; the Gentlemen's Singles, the Ladies' Singles, the Gentlemen's Doubles. the Ladies' Doubles, and the Mixed Doubles. There are also a number of junior events, although these do not form a part of the major tournament draw. Wimbledon is the only major tennis event to take place on the traditional tennis surface of rye grass, with the surface worked on throughout the year to create the wonderful courts that Wimbledon is so renowned for. Both the Australian and US Opens were originally played on a grass surface, although they both now use a synthetic court surface instead.

Wimbledon is a tournament that is rich in history and tradition, with its own uniforms, dress codes, and rituals. The British Royal Family are always present at some of the matches, and they go a long way towards keeping that special Wimbledon tradition alive in the 21st century. Wimbledon holds a special place in the hearts and minds of tennis lovers from all over the world. With the event sold out every year and watched on TV by millions of people from around the globe, it is likely to remain the number one tennis event in the world for many years to come.
